RE: teflon tape on anode rod

We found if we turn it backwards to start you'll feel the threads climb over and drop slightly. This sets the threads in the right position and you can safely start turning the right direction.

RE: Champion Generators in Nat'l Parks or Forests

You can have all the regulations and genset specs printed out, but it all boils down to the local ranger. Don't bother arguing and showing them your paper work saying your genset "meets the standards".
If he/she says shut it off, you shut it off.

RE: Enough power to run a TV - 12v converter issues.

I'll repeat what BFL13 said. Those plastic bodied 12 volt outlets are limited to a MAXIMUM of 8 amps. So adding large wire to it will only cause the outlet to be over loaded with anything over 8 amps (96 watts) and we've had way to many of them over the years melt down and char the surface they were mounted in.
Next best solution is the metal bodied outlet which is rate for a maximum of 20 amps (240 watts).
We recommend anything over 120 watts either be hard wired directly to the battery OR use a specialty high amperage 12 volt connection and suitable wire size.
Why inverter manufacturer's add the plug to 400 watt units is IMHO dangerous.

RE: Cleaning Anode Rod?

Loss of mass of the metal rod is the replacement criteria.
But, as for being horizontal I don't think so. More likely the body got covered by goo or other foreign substance and the area near the end was the only area open to do it's job.
We normally drain the water heaters after each camping trip. A dry anode doesn't corrode and it helps keep out the build up on the bottom of the tank as well.

RE: Cleaning Anode Rod?

I concur, just replace it. You aren't saving anything.
Sure he is. About $20 bucks. I give 'em credit for the weld job. :B
No he's not. If the water heater had enough electrolysis to eat the anode in half it needs a new one not a cobbled up welded together one that may or may not have the same potential as the original.

RE: Refrigerator fires probably very common...

A good place to start is get the make and model of your appliance and stop over at http://bryantrv.com/docs.html for a copy of the SERVICE manual for your appliance (fridge/furnace/water heater).

RE: Refrigerator fires probably very common...

While we've experienced quite a few fridge fires over the years. I will say that we also found a clogged burner that allowed the flame to go where it shouldn't and flammable material to be in a place it shouldn't caused the vast majority of the fires.
So I agree with wa8yxm that lack of proper maintenance is a major factor.

RE: Can I engrave my Dutch Oven??

That could be a problem. Cast Iron is strong, but it is fairly brittle as well. That's why I said don't chisel your ID into the cast iron. I've seen a DO actually survive being backed over by a trailer and another turned into a pile of ruble just from dropping off a table and hitting an exposed rock in the ground.

RE: How long should an AGM Optima Battery last?

ANY battery can last for 6-7 years or fail in a month. Maintenance and proper charging are the keys.
A few tips:
Disconnect battery(s) when not actively camping or connected to shore power. Phantom draws may be small, but the 24/7 draw adds up and even the best battery can be completely drained in 2-3 weeks. Considerably shortening it's life.
Charge the battery before you go. No sense starting out with less than a full charge.
Charge the battery AS SOON as you get home. Other than complete discharge letting a battery set partially discharged is the next worst thing. It promotes sulfation of the plates.
With open wet celled battery(s) check the water level before AND after charging. The old saying 'expose a plate create a doorstop" is not an old wives tale.
With AGM batteries (such as the Optima's) make sure you have your converter/inverter/remote charger is set for charging AGM batteries. Algorithms for wet cell deep cycle batteries can damage or destroy AGM batteries by causing them to lose fluid, which can't be replaced.
As for Optima brand batteries. They have some VERY good marketing people. Since their plate technology was developed for extreme conditions of shock and vibration they take up more room than conventional straight plates. This also means they cost more to produce. So you get a battery than costs more for each size and has less capacity.
If you are considering Optima's check out other AGM batteries. The have the same advantages as the Optima's, but cost less and have capacities at or approaching those of open wet celled deep cycle batteries.

RE: Could it be dirty solar panels?

If it's the panel(s) there's an easy way to check. Simply take a voltage reading BEFORE the charge controller. It should read the rated voltage from your manual/instruction sheet for the panels.

RE: Should I park my motorhome on grass for the winter?

Howard beat me to it. We've used mositure barriers successfully many times for winter storage. As for killing the grass, the RV will do that anyway with or without a barrier. The tarp/whatever also helps discurrage rodents and insects. They like the grass as it provides hidding places and if let grow also provides a "ladder" to the RV.
We also use patio blocks for under the wheels as well. Once you've come out and found an RV sunk in a lawn/field, you'll know why.

RE: Can I engrave my Dutch Oven??

An engraving pen will work just fine. Just don't try and chisel your initials into the cast iron....LOL Remember to protect where you etched as the raw cast iron WILL rust like crazy.
As heavy as they are you'd wouldn't think they could grow legs and get lost, but they do.

RE: Adding on demand water pump...

The only way you would need a new faucet is if you did not have a city water connection. The pump acts the same as the pressurized water coming in from the city connection.

RE: Oops! Bad for Leather!

Since I see Texas as an address, and I'm not sure if it's still the same way south of the border, but we used to shop out our upholstry work accross the border in years gone by. Cost was considerably less, and workmanship was really better than anything we could find outside of having the factory recover the seats.

RE: Depth of battery Discharge, and battery break-in

Not to mention that most battery manufacturers give values of 5-10 complete discharges (apx 10.5 volt) as the service life of a deep cylce wet cell battery.
Sounds like someone has confused NiCads with lead/acid batteries.

RE: Grime Mystery

A curse of PU's since the day the first one came off the line. Any "bare" aluminum will cause it, and what's worse since the stains are actual aluminum there's not much you can do to remove it once it's there.

RE: weighted awning anchors

A common mod is to take small flower pots, put a piece of PVC tubing in the center that fits the awning uprights and fill with cement. Gives about a 10-15 pound weight and you drill a hole through the PVC and upright and use a pit pin to hold them.
Myself I was lucky enough to years ago find a couple to Tiki torch bases that could be filled with water and just fit the uprights. Gave me the same weight and I could empty them for less towing weight.
